The health benefits of honey are well known, just one small tablespoon of pure honey contains incredible amount of vitamin, minerals and enzymes. Unfortunately, not all the honey sold at the supermarket is pure. Honey is often adulterated, meaning it is mixed with glucose solutions or low-quality honeys with a high water content to increase the bottle’s quantity. Here’s a guide on how to check the purity of honey at home using the simple methods.
1. Read the label
Read the label on the jar of honey, prior to its purchase and check that the ingredient list doesn’t contain “high-fructose corn syrup” or commercial glucose, two additives that are frequently used to “stretch” the honey and keep it from solidifying.
2. Using Thumb
Put a small drop of the honey you have on your thumb. Check to see if it spills or spreads around. If it does, it is not pure. Pure honey will stay intact on your thumb.
3. Using Water
Take a tablespoon of honey and add it in a glass of water. Adulterated honey will dissolve in water and you will see it around the glass. Pure honey on the other hand will settle right at the bottom of your glass.
4. Using Bread
Take a small piece of old, hard bread and submerge it in the honey. Remove it 10 minutes later. If the bread is still hard, then the honey is pure. If there is a lot of water in the honey, the bread will soften.
5. Using Candle
Dip a cotton wick of a candle into a bit of the honey. Attempt to light the wick. If the honey is pure, then it will light with ease. If adulterated, the presence of water will not allow it to light.
